Walvisbeen

Een klein schrijftafelonderzoek naar aanleiding van een gevelsteen: Het Walvis Been Is Nu Steen (pakhuis Haarlemmer Houttuinen).

DBNL, De Uithangteekens, Jan ter Gouw en Jacob van Lennep: 't Was in de 16de eeuw, wellicht reeds vroeger, althans ook later nog, gebruikelijk, een walvischbeen, rib of kaak, met ijzeren kettingen ten toon te hangen aan stadhuizen, kasteelen, torens en andere groote gebouwen.

www.collectieutrecht.nl: Aan het gebouw hangt als 'uithangbord' een walviskaak, iets wat vaker bij rechthuizen voorkomt. Op het schilderij van het oude Amsterdamse stadhuis door Pieter Saenredam is ook zo'n walviskaak te zien, precies boven de 'Vierschaar', waar recht gesproken werd. De betekenis is niet zeker, maar het zou kunnen dat het kaakbot een verwijzing is naar de plek waar misdadigers te schande werden gezet: De kaak. Hier werden dus wetsovertreders 'aan de kaak gesteld'.

Bij de rechtspraak in Burum moest de rechter gaan zitten op een grote flint (een zwerfsteen) en onder de kaak rechtspreken. Die kaak is vermoedelijk een walviskaak geweest en het spreekwoord aan de kaak stellen komt hier vandaan.
